Moving Van Rentals - Considering Insurance
by Nancy
Insurance cover can add quite a
number to the total cost of moving van rentals. The need for insurance is to protect the owners against vehicular
damages of any sort especially while the van is still in your care. Some rental agencies insist on you paying up
for the insurance cover while some will waive the fee or make it optional.
Moving van rental agencies may not insist on
charging you for insurance for a number of reasons. If you are moving over a short distance, the risk of damage may
be calculated as negligible. You may not be charged directly for insurance too if the rental agency is supplying
the driver.
In this case, the cost of insurance is borne by
the driver (the agency) and spread over the costs of providing the driver for different trips. Where a rental
service insists on insurance, you may still avoid paying if you can provide proof that your own auto insurance
covers rentals.
However, before you take on the cover on your
own car insurance, make sure you call your insurance agent and verify that you are covered when getting rental
services. Mention the rental agency itself to the agent to be sure that there is no restricted list of rental
services covered by your insurance company.
In addition, ask your agent if your policy
covers you in case of theft and vandalism. Knowing the extent of your cover will help you decide if you want to
extend the cover to your rental or pay the rental service’s insurance premium.
Other information you need to get from the
agent include how and when a claim can be made should any of the circumstances covered in the insurance plan happen
with the moving van rental you are about to get. Make sure to tell the agent what kind of van you are renting. If
it is a truck, describe it to him and ask if it matters if it’s a 4-wheeled vehicle or if it has 6 wheels or
more.
If you are paying by credit card, don’t assume
the credit card company covers your insurance. Most do for car rentals but not for moving van rentals. When you
speak with your insurance agent, make sure to also tell him the duration of the rental.
Request coverage only for the time when you are
renting the moving van. A short-term rental will attract a lesser premium. Similarly, a one-way van rental should
attract a lesser premium.
Where an insurance cover is mandatory before
you rent a moving van, you should then consider a CDW (collision damage waiver) coverage if you are going with your
own insurance especially if the rental agency is offering one for little.
Of course, this is cost-effective as long as
you don’t have a claim later. A CDW is, however, not an actual insurance cover; it is a way of temporarily
extending your own cover while not paying a lot to the rental service.
Consider, however, that when you go with your
own insurance cover for moving van rentals, you are likely to be charged higher premiums should you have a claim.
As always, insurance is about weighing risks.
You should choose the option you are most
comfortable with. If not all these options are offered by a given moving van rental agency, you should put that
into consideration when choosing which rental service to go with.
