How To Compare Truck Rentals For Moving
by Nancy
Why the need to compare
truck rentals for moving? Well, moving between homes can be
a big hassle if you are not well prepared. The longer the distance you have to move, the more important it is to
plan well and especially get the best deal you can from truck rental companies.
There are a number of ways to make this
comparison of contract deals offered by these companies. One is to depend solely on the recommendation of
people you know, people who have used and liked the services of a particular moving
company.
This, however, may not make the best option,
given that your needs are different from those of the people whose good word you take.
Besides, the moving company may have changed their service
offerings since your friends used them.
Yet another option to compare truck rentals for
moving, is to go online and go through the websites of these companies gleaning information that
will help you decide which is the better deal. Bear in mind, you may not get all the data you need to effectively
make an informed comparison between them.
A third method, and the one to be
followed, is to do it the old-fashioned way. Get a local telephone directory and then make a list of the
information you need to have for each of the moving companies within your locality. Such information to have
include price, addition cost, insurance cover, terms of service, size of truck, billing for extra mileage, offers
and return policy.
Therefore, get on the phone and call up the
sales representative of each of the moving truck companies. Get through
your list and ask a lot of questions regarding all the nuances of their truck rental services. Be aware though that
a low up-front fee does not make for a cheap package.
Beware of hidden costs. For example, a company
charging a daily rental fee of $50 which is inclusive of the 50 miles you are likely to go is quite cheaper than
another company charging $35 daily rental fee exclusive of a mileage rate of 50 cent per mile (this brings the
total cost to $60).
Most often, truck rental companies provide
their services in packages. Know everything that is included in each package. If you are going to need additional
equipment, say a dolly or moving pads, ask how much those will cost you. A package that throws those in too may
appear expensive until you know what else you are getting. So, factor that in when comparing it with other truck
rentals.
Furthermore, know if your own insurance cover
will pay for cost of damage to the rental truck or if you need to purchase an additional cover. This may add a lot
to an otherwise cheap service.
One other thing to look into is the return
policy. Do the rental service have an office where you are moving to? In which case you can drop the truck there.
Or do you need to drive it back or will they arrange for the pick-up.
Lastly, check the price of fuel where you are
headed and don’t forget to include that in the cost too.
When you are done collecting these information,
get the total cost for each service. Most likely some attractive offers won’t include additional services you may
like. It will be up to you to decide if you want an all-inclusive rental or if you can make do without some
options.
Look at promo offers twice because, to reduce
cost, some options would have stripped down the standard package. Make sure you understand everything the contracts
stipulate. Then make your decision.
